COMING TO AMERICA!

My sister, Concetta Ceglian Filipas, and I, Rita Ceglian Sopar, will be celebrating our 50th anniversary in America on May 10th of this year.

We were born in Cherso/Cres and then moved to Fiume/Rijeka in 1953. On April 20, 1958 we left for Trieste and a few days later on April 25th we boarded the Ship Saturnia and headed for New York, USA. This was a very difficult journey for us. Not only were we leaving our home, but our family was unable to join us. We were on our own at the ages of 17 and 19. Once we arrived in New York, we were welcomed by our uncle, Mike Rossovich, and his family. We stayed with them in Philadelphia for over one year. In October of 1959 we decided to move once again. We loved New York and moved to Astoria. On March 12, 1960 we were happily reunited with our parents and brother! They had finally arrived. It was a very joyful reunion!

Although we often think of the times when we lived in Europe, we have made America our home. We are saddened by the loss of our parents but will never forget the dreams they had for us and the values they instilled in us. They have always stressed the importance of family.

This year on May 10th my grandson Thomas will be celebrating his First Holy Communion. It will certainly be a special day as we celebrate with him and think back on the time we first arrived in this country. We have so much to be thankful for!
